BIG Labs For Good
Bright Insights Global Labs for Good is driven by a purpose: to leave the world in a better state than we encountered it, not only for the sake of our children but also in tribute to our ancestors.
We work at the intersection of data and equity to reimagine, tinker, and co-create more inclusive, and more beautiful futures for humanity and for our planet. We look at the systemic challenge of Data Equity in three critical domains:
Inclusive, Representative and Alternative Data sets
We are (re)building narratives and creating alternative training-data sets that can be used to help to close the gaps in machine learning and improve BIPOC community engagement and understanding. These are corrective data sets designed to remedy and remove the coded bias and racism from machine learning existing systems.
We EXPAND the definition of "Data"
Our goal is to elevate the capacities of existing machine-learning systems by promoting diverse perspectives and innovation in shaping the concept of "data." We deliberately embrace inclusive pro-African, non-western, and non-individualistic epistemologies, bridging the realms from the drum to the byte and beyond.
We advocate for Training Data Transparency.
Verify your sources. Understand your data. We adhere to the foundational Reuters Trust Principles established in 1941, which mandate integrity, independence, and freedom from bias for Reuters and its personnel. We uphold rigorous standards for decision-making data. In essence, BIG Labs for Good acts as a force multiplier for the Ethical AI and Data Equity movement. We achieve this by adopting a pan-African collaboration-forward approach and leveraging our expertise in data innovation and product development. We are fully aligned with the mission of the Pan-African Deep Learning Indaba: “We work towards a goal of Africans being not only observers and receivers of the ongoing advances in AI, but active shapers and owners of these technological advances.”
